Government Expansion and Spending in Pandemic Could Be Hazardous to the Health of Our Republic

Where normal people see a rising coronavirus body count, Democrats see a political opportunity. That opportunity is to follow Obama’s White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s favorite saying: “never let a crisis go to waste.”

Possibly looking forward to returning to the Washington, DC swamp, Emanuel fired off the following messianic advice to the Democrat big government masses: “Start planning for the future. This has to be the last pandemic that creates an economic depression. We’re going to have more pandemics, but this has to be the last economic depression.”

So, the coronavirus could be just the opportunity that lefties like California Governor Gavin Newsom sees as “an opportunity to reshape the way we do business and how we govern.”

Look what has happened already with the pandemic: The Federal government has sunk over $2 trillion in money we don’t have. They just print it and hope no one calls in the debt and causes all those digital fake dollars to disappear.

Close behind that collapse will be just what the socialists and their useful idiot progressives have sought since Karl Marx: spread the misery equally, except for a few elites like Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi.

For further evidence look what is happening in the misguided belief that the federal government can write checks and rescue us from the wrecked economy that Democrats crave. Only the federal government can burn through billions of dollars in two weeks but cause nothing but confusion and resentment and get nowhere near solving a problem that could be solved simply by letting healthy people get back to work.

In these times of confusion, panic, and conflict, it’s always best to remember the basics. Stop and smell the odors coming through the opening door of an enormous expansion of government. That rotten smell is the smoldering remains of our country’s federal republic.

From the beginning, the idea behind federalism has been a separation of responsibilities. States do their bit in looking after local business within their borders. The federal government does what the states cannot do: national defense, foreign affairs, regulating interstate commerce, etc.

Didn’t our founders really mean it when they adopted the 10th Amendment? That amendment says simply, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

Yes, they meant it. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to ratify the most sensational governance document ever.

So, there is a valid argument that federal welfare programs and everything else the federal government does to subsidize states are unconstitutional. Who could have predicted that over half the federal budget is already spoken for in paying for clearly unconstitutional government programs—Social Security and Medicaid?

So, what’s the remedy? There isn’t a politically viable solution, but there is a defense.

The defense against further decay of our federal republic is the foundation of our Constitution. It’s the checks and balances and separation of powers. The latter foiled the Democrats’ shameful impeachment of President Trump.

In their wisdom, our founders gave us the U.S. Senate and a powerful presidency, which have lately been the only adults in the room in the face of leftwing nuts like Rep. Ocasio Cortez and shamefully weak leaders like Nancy Pelosi.

The barbarians are at the gate. The Democrats can never, ever take over the U.S. Senate. President Trump needs a second term to restore order and let our political and economic systems heal themselves.

It is nothing less than what our founders intended.
