Will President Trump’s Legacy Be to Bring the Troops Home?

After several thousand years of bloody strife in the Middle East, is there anyone left in America who believes that US troops are going to be able to sort that region out? A few days ago it seemed as if America was about to enter World War III with Iran, Russia and China. But in just a few hours, the chances of war were over. Instead, an embarrassed Iran is now admitting to the world community that it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet during its aggressions. Both sides have stepped back from the brink. Isn’t this now the perfect time for President Trump to pull all US troops out of the region?

Now that America has become energy independent, and a net energy exporter for the first time in our history thanks to fracking, why are we in the Middle East at all? To spread democracy? That’s been proven to fail every time in Middle Eastern countries. Tribal rivalries and hatreds among the Arab nations run much deeper than the status of nationhood that was forced on all of them at the end of World War I. Iran and Saudi Arabia are perpetually at war with each other, in hopes of establishing a hegemonic caliphate once again. Shouldn’t they sort that problem out on their own?

Just a few days after the tit-for-tat between the US and Iran, a convoy of US troops was hit by a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan. We’ve had troops in that country for so long that babies who were born after the 9/11 attacks can enlist to go fight there. Why are we still in Afghanistan? What vital national interest is it serving at this point to continue a major military presence among the Afghans?

The Western hemisphere now has major problems of its own, and American troops could be put to much better use over here. We have a major national security threat right on our own southern border and in the waters off our coasts.

Pirates are increasingly attacking ships and oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. What? I thought you had to go to the far side of Africa, all the way to the Indian Ocean, to encounter pirates in this day and age. But no. Mexico and Central America have descended into failed narco-states, so men on armed boats are increasingly taking to the high seas to earn their fortunes. But don’t worry! The US military has its aircraft carriers just south of Iran!

Illicit drugs brought into America across our porous southern border are now killing more Americans annually than we lost in the entire Vietnam War. Mexico’s casualties from the cartels are horrific. For the past several years, it was estimated that there more than 40,000 Mexican “Desaparacidos” – the “Disappeared.” The cartels bury their enemies – sometimes entire villages – in mass graves and they’re never seen again.

Mexico’s new president, Andres Manual Lopez Obrador (AMLO) ran on a promise to pacify the drug cartels. Instead, the Mexican military recently had to surrender to a drug cartel following a major gun battle in a mid-sized city. In the middle of that gun battle, Lopez Obrador received a phone call from the drug cartel, in which he was informed that the cartel had just executed the family members of many of the soldiers they were currently fighting with. AMLO immediately surrendered.

And now the Mexican government has announced revised figures. There aren’t 40,000 “Desaparacidos” casualties. The true number is closer to 62,000. When the Mexican economy crashes entirely – which it eventually will – what will American do when 20, 30 or 50 million desperate Mexican refugees suddenly flood our southern border? We can’t possibly take them all in. We can’t even take care of our own people at this point, as you can see in most major feces and needle infested Democrat-run cities. How will we respond to Mexico’s collapse?

The answer, of course, seems to present itself. Get every American soldier out of the Middle East and station them on our own southern border. Protect America from actual security threats to America, instead of trying to police a 1,400-year-old conflict on the other side of the globe. Do it, Mr. President. Bring the troops home at long last.
