Contrary to Popular Democrat Belief, Presidents Can Fire Their Employees

According to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), there appear to be many various confusing crimes for which President Donald Trump deserves to be impeached. Trump’s phone call with the president of Ukraine has variously been referred to as “treason,” “a quid pro quo,” and “bribery.” But perhaps one of Trump’s greatest crimes, according Schiff and the media, was that he dared to fire one of his own employees.

Trump fired the former Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, after he learned that she was directly and blatantly undermining the foreign policy directives that the American people elected Trump to carry out.

Firing Yovanovitch was worse than a “crime” against America, according to the really smart people cheering for impeachment. It was a veritable sin against the United States.

After Yovanovitch testified in Schiff’s impeachment trial against President Trump, the media hailed her as a saint. Chris Matthews on MSNBC corrected himself when called her a “woman;” he had really meant to call her a “hero.” CNN said that Yovanovitch had a “spine of steel” to take on Donald Trump.

How they square Yovanitch’s spine of steel with the fact that she cried in front of the cameras about Donald Trump’s mean tweets was never clarified. CNN’s John King also stated that one of the “gifts” of traveling around the world for his job is the opportunity to “meet people like her [Yovanovitch].”

Adam Schiff attempted to make a big deal out of Yovanovitch’s testimony due to the fact that Donald Trump fired her. President’s can’t just fire diplomats who work for the State Department! What is this, a democracy?!

Oddly enough, on his first day in office in 2009, Barack Obama fired every foreign diplomat who had been appointed by George W. Bush. Ambassadors who had been appointed by Bill Clinton, but were still on the job eight years later, got to keep their posts. But every Bush appointee was canned on the same day.

It was a 100% partisan act on Barack Obama’s first day on the job. Funny how there were no calls for impeaching Barack Obama at the time, isn’t it?

This is because all ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president. A sitting president can fire any Executive branch employee at any time, for any reason. A president can fire an ambassador for no reason if he wishes to do so.

A president can wake up on the wrong side of the bed and fire an ambassador simply because he’s cranky on that day. It’s one of the perks that goes with being the president, the only person in the Executive branch who is actually elected by the people.

Immediately after she was confirmed by the Senate in 1993, former Attorney General Janet Reno fired 93 US Attorneys who had been appointed by Bush I and Reagan. George W. Bush phased out all of Clinton’s US attorneys a few months into his first term. Obama and Eric Holder phased out all of Bush II’s US attorneys over a three-month period in 2009.

Trump got rid of 46 of Obama’s appointed US Attorneys in March of 2017. And so it goes. That’s how it almost always goes in Washington, DC, where we have the pleasure of a peaceful transition of power every few years. These firings and replacements are almost always partisan in nature, but it’s how the system has worked, and everyone has agreed to let it work that way – until TRUMP.

Like almost everything in Washington, DC these days, the idea that the elected president can fire his own employees – even with legitimate reasons, such as former FBI Director James Comey – is unthinkable. How dare President Trump fire the ambassador to the Ukraine?! Let’s impeach him!

Everyone also seems to want to gloss over the reasons why Trump fired Yovanovitch. She was telling Ukrainian politicians to ignore direct requests and/or conditions for foreign aid from the President of the United States. The reason?

If they just wait until 2020, hopefully the voters will choose a president to replace Trump and return to the criminal status quo. A skeptical person might look at an Obama-appointed ambassador who is directly undermining the foreign policy of a different president as committing the crime of sedition.

If anyone deserved to be fired in the State Department, it’s Marie Yovanovitch – the “hero” with a “spine of steel.” Her real duty was to resign her post if she was unwilling to carry out the foreign policy directives of her boss. Instead, the “hero” decided to stay on the job and join the #Resistance.
