In the early morning hours following Trump supporters storming the nation’s Capitol building to protest Democrats refusal to audit the results of the 2020 mail-in scam, the President issued a statement through White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino promising a “peaceful transition of power.”
While the President continued to refuse conceding the election and “totally disagrees” with the results, his statement reads:
“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th. I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”
Congress reassembled following the riots to continue the certification of election results. Vice President Mike Pence officially certified Joe Biden at 3:40 a.m. EST yesterday morning.
The certification followed a tumultuous day of events in Washington. Early Wednesday morning began with a massive March for Trump rally featuring several high-profile speakers. Trump lawyer and former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani argued for a “trial by combat.” Donald Trump, Jr.’s was cut off on live television after using explicit language.
The President also spoke, telling rally supporters he would march with them in the streets. However, the plan was cut short after protestors stormed the Capitol building early in the certification process in a joint session of Congress.
In total, 52 arrests were made. One trespasser was shot by a DC police officer and later died, a 14-year female Air Force veteran named Ashi Battitt. Three other deaths were also reported in relation to the day’s events.
Chaos ensued as Capitol building security broke down and streams of protestors entered the building. Law enforcement later used tear gas to protect entryways. Vice President Pence was evacuated by security, while members of Congress sheltered in place during the lockdown.
President Trump then sent the National Guard to the Capitol to clear rioters from the building. The President also tweeted, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
In what lawmakers called “an act of defiance” and “failed insurrection,” Congress returned to continue certification of the Electoral College results. Despite Republican challenges to the electoral votes of battleground states, efforts were outvoted, with Biden certified as the next President of the United States to be inaugurated on January 20.
The events also follow a difficult day for Republicans in Georgia. By early Tuesday, media outlets were reporting over 98 percent of the vote, with Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock defeating Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Jon Ossoff defeating Republican Senator David Perdue.
Even Donald Trump, Jr., whose rhetoric stood among the strongest in the earlier hours of the day, quickly condemned the rioters in tweet: “This is wrong and not who we are. Be peaceful and use your 1st Amendment rights, but don’t start acting like the other side. We have a country to save and this doesn’t help anyone.”
